    Why do some study methods stick while others evaporate by exam day? The answer is in the psychology of how memory forms. Understanding a few principles makes it obvious why the effective methods work — and why the comfortable ones don't.

    Memory is built by effort, not exposure

    Memories strengthen when you work to retrieve them, not when you passively re-expose yourself to information. This is why testing yourself beats re-reading: the difficulty of recall is the mechanism, not a side effect. Psychologists call this a desirable difficulty — harder now, stronger later.

    The illusion of fluency

    Re-reading and highlighting create fluency: the material feels familiar and easy, so you believe you know it. But fluency is not the same as recall, and it is why students are so often surprised by exam results despite “studying for hours”. Recognising this illusion is half the battle.

    Spacing and forgetting

    A little forgetting between study sessions is good: retrieving something you have partly forgotten strengthens it far more than reviewing something still fresh. That is the psychology behind the spacing effect and why spreading study across days beats cramming — the opposite of what feels efficient.

    Attention, sleep and consolidation

    Learning depends on attention at encoding and sleep for consolidation. Divided attention (studying with a phone buzzing) weakens the memory as it forms; sleep afterwards is when the brain files it. Skipping either undermines everything else.
