Most students judge a method by how much they capture in the moment — but a page you never re-open is wasted effort, however complete it looks. In this guide we walk through the five note-taking methods that consistently work at university, how each one actually operates, and how to choose the right one for the class in front of you.

What makes a note-taking method “good”?
Before the methods themselves, it helps to know what you are optimising for. A good method does three things:
- Forces you to think, not transcribe. Copying a lecturer word-for-word feels productive but bypasses understanding. The best methods make you compress ideas into your own words — and the act of rewording is where the learning happens.
- Produces reviewable notes. Notes should be scannable later: clear structure, room for cues, and questions you can test yourself against.
- Matches the material. A method that suits a history lecture can be wrong for an organic-chemistry class. Fit matters more than fashion.
With that lens, here are the five methods worth mastering.
1. The Cornell method
The Cornell method, developed at Cornell University, divides each page into three zones: a narrow left-hand cue column, a wide right-hand notes column, and a summary strip along the bottom. During class you write in the notes column. Afterwards — ideally within a day — you add cue words and questions on the left and a two-line summary at the foot of the page.

A worked example: in a history lecture on the causes of a revolution, your notes column captures the events and evidence; afterwards you add cues like “economic causes?” and “3 turning points?” in the left column, and a one-line summary at the foot: “Long-term structural pressures + short-term triggers.” A week later you cover the page, read the cues, and answer aloud — a five-minute self-test that would otherwise never happen.
2. The outline method
The outline method uses indentation to show hierarchy: main topics on the left, sub-points indented beneath, details indented further. It is fast, familiar, and ideal for material that is already well-structured — a lecture that moves cleanly from point to sub-point, or a textbook chapter with clear headings.
Its weakness is that it assumes structure exists. In a rambling seminar or a topic where ideas connect sideways rather than top-down, a rigid outline can force artificial order onto messy material. When that happens, reach for mapping instead.
3. Mind mapping
Mind mapping puts the central topic in the middle of the page and branches outward into related concepts, with links drawn between branches. It is the strongest method when relationships between ideas matter more than sequence — think of a topic where causes, effects and themes interconnect, such as the causes of a war or the systems of the human body.
Because it is visual and non-linear, mapping is harder to do at full lecture speed. Many students use it as a second-pass tool: take linear notes live, then redraw them as a map afterwards to expose the connections. That redrawing is itself a form of active review.
4. The charting method
When information is repetitive and comparable — dates, cases, experiments, or the features of several theories — a table beats prose. The charting method sets up columns for each attribute and rows for each item, so you can compare across the row and down the column at a glance. It is invaluable in law, medicine, and any subject where you will be asked to contrast several things under exam pressure.
5. The flow (sentence) method — and the handwriting question
The flow method is fast, free-form note-taking: short sentences and arrows capturing ideas as they come, prioritising keeping up over neatness. It suits fast, dense lectures where structure only becomes clear afterwards. The trade-off is that flow notes almost always need tidying into one of the structured methods above within 24 hours, or they decay into an unusable jumble.
One evidence-based point worth knowing whichever method you choose: how you record matters. In a well-known study, Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014) found students who took notes by hand understood concepts better than those typing on a laptop — because typing tempts you to transcribe verbatim, while handwriting forces you to summarise. If you type, impose the same discipline deliberately: paraphrase, don’t transcribe.

You do not need one method for everything — you need the right method for each class:
- Structured lecture (clear points): Cornell or outline.
- Interconnected, thematic material: mind mapping.

Digital notes are searchable, easy to reorganise, and simple to back up, which matters when you have three years of material to revise from. Apps that support the Cornell layout or quick outlining work well; tools that turn notes into flashcards are a bonus because they push you straight into retrieval.
A practical compromise many students settle on: handwrite in lectures to stay engaged, then type up and reorganise the keepers within 24 hours. That tidy-up pass doubles as your first review — you are not copying, you are actively rebuilding the material.
Turning notes into marks
No method helps if the notes sit untouched until the week before an exam. Whichever you use, close the loop within 24 hours: tidy the page, add two or three questions your notes answer, and file them.
